I teach both handbuilding and wheel forming. I also hold Pit-fire, raku and kiln building workshops as the need arises.

With my hand-built forms I try to capture a natural flowing form and either burnish highly and spray with oxides, or if I glaze I like to let the glaze decorate the piece with the same natural flow. The beauty imparted by the reduction in the pit-firing process is a constant mystery of magic to me. My dinnerware is hand-thrown, I tend either very rounded forms or very symmetrical, with minimal decoration. Designs are ever evolving, and I enjoy the design and experimental process.

It opened its doors in 1970 amongst the beautiful setting of the Sunnyvale Community Center. The center’s rolling grounds, beautiful water features and outdoor sculptures are the perfect setting to come relax and work with clay. The studio also has a panoramic view of the center’s pond and 200 year old Live Oak.
Today, the primary function of the studio is to create an opportunity for community members to experience and experiment with the clay medium. All levels of experience are welcome, but production pottery is not permitted. Choose from our beginning classes for youth and adults, our popular parent/child class or our Open Studio Hours.
Studio fee include use of the studio's 15 electric pottery wheels, a kick wheel, slab roller, spray booth, and extruder. All bisque and glaze firing is done on sight in our two 16.5 cu. Ft. electric kilns and two 24 cu. ft. gas kilns. Reduction and Raku firing are also available. The cost of firing and glazing is included in studio/class fees. Clay must be purchased in studio for $13 per 25 lb. bag. Choice of four clay bodies.

The classes are for all levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced, working on the electric wheel or in hand building. The classes are small, only up to eight people per class, and each person has their own wheel to work on.
Classes run in eight week sessions, in the evenings during the week or on Sundays. There is Open Studio time for registered students to work without instruction on Saturdays.

I have been making pots and building kilns for 30 years. Presently I am making early American reproduction salt-fired stoneware (cone 11). My primary glaze is an oak ash that is just beautiful. I am willing to share what I have learned with interested parties. Twenty years of salting, 0ver a hundred kilns built, equipment making, clay forming, a bunch of ways to cheat the "ceramic rule book", on and on etc. etc.

Is anyone interested in helping to build a large, long, Korean type of Tamba kiln, or commonly called a "split-bamboo kiln" we will be laying down a cone-11 flat with wood. The design stakes are in the ground and plans drawn. This is the type of kiln that is fired from small ports along the top of the dragons spine. Lots of ash deposition and flashing. Look up "Tamba, one of the seven ancient kilns of Japan" There is a clay deposit on my land that will make kiln blocks for building and I have hundreds of acres of fire-wood waiting for the sacrament of a stoneware fire. Fredericksburg VA I am currently working out of my home doing ceramics and crafts - I teach ceramics at the Spotsylvania Parks and Recreation and will be teaching crafts at YMCA this summer. I offer classes for adults and children in my home at your convenience. I also do Birthday Parties for a small fee which pays for the piece to be painted, the paints and brushes and glazing and firing afterwards. I have over 2000 molds in inventory and currently work with 2 kilns for firing, but have 7 kilns in all. Would consider selling a few kilns if someone is interested. I have 3 electric kilns, can offer firings to Cone 04; Cone 6 for small quantities. Raku kiln and firing help available. I teach throwing, handbuilding, and tilemaking. I have 4 electric wheels and a slab roller. Also happy to give beginners advice over the phone about buying equipment, setting up their own studio, etc.

The Seminar at Red Dirt Studio: I teach an advanced seminar on sculpture and ceramics in my studio. The seminar addresses a small group of self-directed potters and sculptors who wish to participate in a collective work/study/critique environment. We make things, think critically, talk, problem-solve, pool resources, and generate good creative energy. We address the making of art and the business of art. I am a ceramic sculptor, showing locally, nationally and internationally. My work is in the permanent collection of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian. I’ve taught at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, and currently teach at Gallaudet University.

CrackPots is a working studio located near Lake Michigan just north of the Illinois border, offering ongoing 6-week evening classes in wheel throwing, hand-building and tile making. Class sizes are small with 6-8 students per session. We offer oxidation firing in low-fire earthenware and mid-range stoneware and porcelain. Wide variety of glazes are available. We welcome all ability levels and offer open studio time if you prefer to work on your own. We also host Sunday afternoon workshops, which include tile-making intensives, mosaics, fused glass, art welding, concrete sculpting, and assemblage art.
